The Joys and Challenges of Adolescence

Adolescence is the twilight period between childhood and youth and joy and challenges. This is the best phase of our lives that is filled with immense possibilities, hopes, aspirations, fantasies, uncertainties, toil and high drama. We realize only later how much our lives are connected with this most dramatic and thrilling stage of life.

Characteristics of Adolescence

The strict discipline of school is now out of date. I was thrilled with the prospect of going to college and making new friends. My excellent grades in ICSE called for celebration. Weeks went by in partying, outing with friends, watching movies, chatting on the Internet and playing. It is indeed a great respite after the gruelling boards examinations, which even my parents did not grudge. Gossiping endlessly with a friend on the phone and playing pranks became the order of the day. However at home, I need my space. No more cuddling up to parents, for now, it appeared foolish and childish. In the privacy of the room my fantasies took flight, making me daydream my aspiration and ambition.

It is also very common to be obsessed with one’s looks. Keeping track of the latest fashion trends and aping the youth icons in mannerism and style is quite normal. The leg pulling and harmless pranks between friends make life easy going and free of all worldly worries.

Peer Pressure During Adolescence

The joy and euphorbia however soon dies down, as the first quarterly examinations approach. back to books, and burning the midnight oil, however, did not help, for the not good grades told it all. Realization soon dawned that resting on my laurels would get me nowhere. To achieve my ambition of doing engineering from the hallow portals of IIT; I would have to study hard. Picking up the gauntlet, I firmly resolved to focus on my studies, The strenuous routine soon began to take its toll. My pale cheeks and loss of appetite did not go unnoticed by my mother. She soothed me telling me to have faith in myself and do ‘Karma’, without thinking about the reward, for the fruits of labour are always sweet. Her compassion and counselling was a divine help and motivated me to strive harder. Nevertheless, the doubt and underlying fear persisted, giving me sleepless nights, often making me sit up in bed perspiring profusely.

Music is the best way to overcome depression in Adolescence
I find music to be really helpful at hard times

Besides academics, one is also faced with challenges on the social and emotional fronts. Being grown up you are expected to behave more responsibly and lend a hand to parents in their daily chores. On the emotional front, you need to show maturity in handling heartaches and relationships, which can be potentially damaging.Adolescence is indeed a very crucial phase of our life, which can make or mar our future. Though filled with joy and happiness bereft of any responsibility, it throws up numerous challenges that ultimately mould our future. You have to make a lot of choices. Sometimes it’s hard, because you don’t want people to think your stupid or a chicken for not doing something. Here is one of the choices you have to make is who you hang out with. The people you hang with make a big difference. You don’t want to get into the wrong crowd, and end up getting in trouble with the law, or doing anything stupid that you would regret afterwards. If you find the right crowd of friends they’ll make this the best years of your life!!

  1. Interesting thoughts on adolescence. For me, personally, it was a time of confusion, not listening to my instincts, and kind of following the crowd, or doing what I thought was expected of me. I find that I didn’t rebel too much, which is perhaps why I’m ‘rebelling’ (loosely) now.

  2. You have pointed out some interesting facts in your article. I would also add that adolescents should have support from their parents and family also, as without it a lot of bad choices can be made.

    1. Exactly! It is even worse when parents tend to follow conventional norms and neglect their child’s feelings. No adolescent can overcome that unless he has enough courage to safeguard his wishes at all costs.

  3. I think that we are all just going from one crowd to another, to those who say they were just following the crowd I understand that they are using it in a negative kind of way. I myself stop trying to fit into the popular crowd and others crowds became more appealing that I started following, now grant it they were a group of college bound positive kids but we had our own clique. We are human and that human elements makes us lone for another human being with similar interests.

  4. Great post. For me it was a time where I was craaazyy haha I was mad all the time and I fight a lot especially with professor’s because I felt how they’re not fair at all. I have calmed time since then thankg god and I use my head more haha. I’m 21 so I still get mad when college professor’s are not fair or I believe they are wrong but I’m more mature so I deal with it other way 🙂

  7. Urgh, adolescence. I don’t look back on it with great fondness. It is a time of change and uncertainty and doubt. You are on the cusp of adulthood; ready to take on the responsibility of adulthood without the maturity and experience to back it up. No wonder it seems to be a time of mistakes and failing on your face.

  8. I wish I had a more “freedom” upbringing as my parents restricted a lot from me. I wish they believed in me more. I’m slightly anti social due to this. Great article – very informative.

    1. I think it’s more important for the parents to understand this crucial phase, than the children themselves for it is a proven fact that parents are majorly wronged in their perception of their child’s mind.

  10. I agree although I had to grow up from a very young age for various reasons, life was not always easy for me but one good thing about a rough childhood and teenage years is that it taught me to be stronger and embrace who I was as a person.

  11. Great article, especially the part on music. Sometimes you do not need a psychiatrist or a good listener, sometimes you just need to listen yourself, maybe listen to the words of a musician, to which you can relate, and even apart from lyrics, music can be the best therapist.

    1. Thanks for visiting! And yes, even Shakespeare has said that “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages.”

  17. I spent most of my teen years alone. My parents were divorced when I was in elementary school. My Mom worked 2 jobs to support me and my sister, so she wasn’t around much. I just did the best I could. That was all that I could do.
